Our cities continue to grow unabated. Only 30% of Indians lives in a city compared to the global average of 50%!This rapid mass urbanisation problem WILL NOT be solved using rural development tactics. Its only pushing back the inevitable.
We MUST embrace urbanisation (cities are actually more efficient from many aspects including greenhouse gas emissions, space utilisation, etc.) and and look at how we can help alleviate the acute problems that will accompany the growth of our cities.
I'm convinced that the youth of this country are its only hope - (No disrespect for Anna Hazare!) The incredible energy and enthusiasm shown by the participating teams to tackle Mumbai's most pressing social and environmental problems using for-profit, social enterprise models makes me feel proud to have helped start this movement.
